Weekly Weigh-In AND What to Wear!

So first things first, since yesterday's post was dedicated to little miss Sadie, we are doing two in one today!

Weekly Weigh-In - Week 3

I FINALLY worked out!!! It was a struggle at the beginning of the week, but now that I'm in the groove, I'm on fire! (que Alicia keys "That Girl is on FIIIRRREEE") Yep, that just happened. Anywho, I'm getting pretty confident that I won't die on Saturday's 10K, so that's good. Here are my workout deets:

Monday - 3 miles
Friday - 3 miles
Sunday - 2.5 miles
Tuesday - 4 miles

And the most anticpiated question....did I lose weight during all that? Let's see what the scale has to say!

That's right, even though I still have quite a ways to go, I'm feeling good with my progress. Especially after last week's stagnant weigh in. I am at a total of 5.6lbs since I got serious and I want to thank each and every one of you for keeping me focused!

Now on to the fun stuff: What to Wear Wednesday!

I wore my Lilly all day on Monday to honor the late Lilly Pulitzer, but due to being in the hospital all day awaiting the birth of my neice, I didn't get a picture. Don't worry though, there will be plenty of Lilly featured on What to Wear Wednesdays!

Sorry for the creepy model picture...but you get the point.

I decided to embrace the spring summer weather and wear one of my favorite dresses! I got this dress from Target's Jason Wu collection and have been in love ever since. It is the perfect work dress. Not only is it comfortable, but it's sophisticated and classy. Wear it with heels and you are ready for whatever the day brings. Not to mention, the pearl neckline makes accessorizing a breeze...you don't have to! (I'm the worst at accessorizing so this dress is made for me!)

And what completes this day better than walking in the office only to find your boss wearing the exact same thing?! We couldn't resist snapping a picture. :) At least they were different colors. Funny thing, not a single person noticed and we work next to each other!

Week 2 Weigh In

This week brought on a lot of challenges. I'm not going to say I failed, but I definitely didn't do as good as I had hoped. More on that later, but first I need to tell you a story.

You always hear about how people hit rock bottom on weight loss shows like Biggest Loser. You know, that one moment when they knew they had a problem and needed to turn their lives around. I hit that moment yesterday. The end of last week didn't go over too well. We had food brought into the office (including these amazing giant donuts) and I drank 4 nights last week. Oh yeah, I didn't start working out last week like I said. I wasn't committed. Don't get me wrong, I've made better choices than before, but not enough to make a lifestyle change.

So yesterday morning, I got into work a little early and went to make my Weight Watchers breakfast sandwich and put my lunch in the fridge when I see a box of donuts. Where these donuts fresh? Oh no, these were the same donuts from Friday! Knowing full well the status of the donuts, I put my breakfast away and grabbed one, proudly strutted back to my desk, took a bite when all of a sudden it hit me like a ton of bricks a stale donut. Sure it was still edible in my fat girl opinion, but it wasn't worth starting my day off wrong for a stale donut.

I spent yesterday focusing on drinking my water, which I failed to do over the weekend (beer and wine counts as water, right?) and not mindless eating. I also ran for the first time in a long time. It was hard, but I felt AMAZING afterward. I want to run everyday this week just to have that feeling of accomplishment.

Now on to the stats....

I mentioned before I didn't do as well as I wanted to (target is 2lbs per week) but as long as I didn't gain, I need to be happy. I think this week is really going to be the jump start I need now that I'm mixing eating right portion control with exercise. Week 3 here I come!

Week 1 Weigh In

Made it through one of the hardest weeks, in my opinion, for dieting: week one. This is the week that you go from eating whatever you want when you want it to actually counting points and making conscious decisions to eat the right thing.

This week was definitely a success. I was even away from the office most of the week, but managed to avoid temptation. I was so worried about having to eat out while in DC. Usually I will cave and eat whatever I want justifying that I was on my feet at a tradeshow all day and deserved it. Then this came to mind:

I'm such a picky eater (not liking many fruits and vegetables) that dieting for me is all about portion control. It also means to chose smarter from the menu instead of ye ol' faithful chicken tenders and French fries. (Yes I'm aware I eat like a five year old, don't judge.)

So here it goes, the scale says I'm down 3 lbs and that is more than I could have hoped for! Every pound lost is one step closer to getting where I want to be.

Since week one is traditionally the hardest week for me because I suffer withdrawl from the things I love, sugar, soda, and fatty foods I decided to not start a work out regiment until week two. Now that I have the eating thing down I can start running and lifting weights again.

All-in-all I'm happy with how this week went and hope for some big numbers again for week two!

Getting Skinny

Here we go again! I do these "fresh start" posts periodically as an attempt to hold myself accountable (which was this blog's original purpose), but fail every time. This weekend marked three years since I started Weight Watchers for the first time in hopes to lose weight for my wedding. After three years what do I have to show for all that? Absolutely NOTHING. I am right where I was when I started, can you believe it?! How you ask? During those three years I managed to lose nearly 30 lbs and gain every last pound back.

So I got to thinking.  How was I successful three years ago? Weight Watchers. I followed the points system religiously and began running. It was that simple. Simple in the fact that I CAN do this because I HAVE done this. Not simple in that it takes a whole lot of willpower and commitment.

The cruise has come and gone, but summer is quickly approaching and with that so is another birthday. I have exactly three months (before I turn 27 and I want to start that year off right!). Not to mention I can't afford for my summer wardrobe to not fit!) So let it be written: I WILL do this...again., but not without your help. I need to be held accountable. Leave me messages asking about my progress as a friendly reminder to stay on track and I will post my weigh-ins every Tuesday (like I was trying to do before) with no excuses. DEAL?

If you too are looking for a fresh start, join me! The more the merrier!

Yesterday was my first day counting points again and I quickly realized how much I have been eating lately. I came home from work with just 8 points left and felt like I resisted temptation all day. I managed to not go out to dinner (my weakness because I despise cooking) and made tacos. I should have only had two but somehow my brain told my stomach we were still hungry. So three tacos later I was 8 points over for the day. Leave it to me to screw up day one.

I'm not dwelling on this because I did well during the day and drank over 100oz of water and didn't eat anything I shouldn't have (until dinner of course). I thought of today as a practice day/reality check.

Here is today's official weigh in - Never thought I would see those numbers again.

It's Time

I know I talk a lot about losing weight here, but for some reason I can't seem to commit to the lifestyle change. I know what I need to do, I've done it before, I just need to do it!

The last time I did a Training Tuesday post was over a month ago and I've managed to gain even more weight since then (devastating). Ever since I came back from Puerto Rico I can't seem to shed those lbs I put on while down there. (Damn those lime daiquiris!)

With only a few days left before I leave for the cruise, it's time to have real talk with myself. I can't go back to the weight I was at when I started all this nonsense 3 years ago (I'm only a few pounds away from my heaviest). Habits need to change and they need to change quick and for good!

Everyone needs to hit their breaking point. A moment where there are no more excuses. My moment was yesterday when I was attempting to pack for my cruise. My "go to" shorts and dresses are now obscenely tight and don't look the same as they did last year. I know what you're thinking. "Doesn't she leave in 5 days? How does she think she can change anything in just a few days? Wasn't she supposed to be working on all of this 6 weeks ago?" Well my friends, I failed. I never committed and here I am writing about this all too familiar topic again.

So as I had my mini breakdown while packing, I immediately stopped, changed into my gym clothes and went to the gym. Talk about seizing the moment! And boy did it work! I had one of the best workouts I've had in a while. I ran 3 miles in under 30 minutes, did arm weights with 10lb weights instead of 8, and even did 45 second planks in between my three sets! That was just what the doctor ordered! I already feel 10lbs lighter!

This weekend I watched history be made. The first ever women's UFC fight was Saturday and boy did it inspire me! A few summers ago, my girlfriends and I joined LA Boxing to get into shape. Not only did we tone up, but I gained the confidence I had always lacked when it came to my body. I felt strong. The fight this weekend made me miss all of that. Maybe that's a sign for me to reactivate my membership?!

Enough about me and my struggles, what was your biggest motivator? Also, what keeps you motivated when you want to quit? Sorry for the wordy post, but I think I needed to get all of that off my chest.

Training Tuesday - 1.15.13

Even though I'm not actively training for anything, I'm still going to keep up with Training Tuesdays to track my progress. Ironically enough, Sunday was the Disney Marathon, and I would be lying if I told you I didn't feel an ounce of regret. I know I made the right decision all around, (you can read all about it here) but a little piece of me wonders how would I have done?!  Something I've learned is to not dwell on failures. Sure, I punked out and didn't do the race, but it doesn't mean I'll never have the opportunity again. Hopefully, next time when I get the itch to do a marathon, I will look back on what happened over the last few months and decide to fully commit. For those of you who ran the marathon, CONGRATS! I was there in spirit cheering you on and can't wait to hear all about it!

With all of that being said, it is another week and I am still meeting my friend at the gym bright and early before work! I am on week 2 of these 5:45AM work outs and I couldn't be prouder of myself. I've always wanted to do morning workouts so my evenings would be free, but I never could make it happen...until NOW!

Today I am down another pound . I always wish the weight would come off faster (was hoping for 2lbs a week), but they say the slower the better, right? Only 6 1/2 weeks before the cruise and I plan to live in a bathing suit (without feeling insecure) for a week!

Speaking of bathing suits....I'm having major drama trying to find one. Anyone recommend a certain brand or store to get a bathing suit? I NEVER buy swimsuits but because of the cruise, I'm going to treat myself to a new one! I prefer modern one pieces or a skirted bikini. Let me know your thoughts!

100th Post Celebration!

I cannot believe that I've stuck with this blog for so long. Usually I'm the kind of person that dables in a bunch of different things but truly never sticks to one thing for long (yes, I'm aware that this is a flaw). So to make it to my 100th Post is quite the accomplishment! (Go ahead, throw the confetti and hoot and holler! "thank you, thank you")

Ok, now that's out of the way. Sure, this blog consists mostly of my own inner thoughts and ramblings, and rarely do I post anything of true relevance, but believe it or not, I've learned quite a bit. Not only has it been a learning experience becasue I didn't know the first thing about the blogging world, but I've been learning a lot about myself (cheezy, I'm aware). However, most importantly, I would not be writing this post today if it weren't for YOU! The fact that you stick around and follow along with me, is more then I could have ever hoped. So for that, THANK YOU!

Now, onto what today's post is really about. My weigh-in...dun dun dun. So a few weeks ago (before the holidays) I told you I'm getting back on board to run more and eat less. I promised I would keep you posted with weekly weigh-ins and monthly measuremnents. Because of Christmas and New Years I didn't do my 2nd weigh-in until now.

Not bad, huh? A loss is a loss right? I feel like this week is already off to a better start than last. I ran for the first time in a very long time on Saturday and again this morning! Yep, I couldn't be prouder! I got up and went to the gym at 5:45 this morning and boy do I feel good! Trying again for Thursday.

How is your weight loss going?! I like to here about how other people are doing in hopes to keep me motivated.

Training Tuesday - The End

I don't even know where to begin. I have been struggling with my marathon training for about a month or so now and have let myself fall behind. Not just a few miles behind, like nearly 10! I have hit a point with training that I need to decide to either commit and accept that I won't get all my miles in or walk away (also known as quitting).

This weekend was pivotal for me. If I got my miles in, then I think I could have stuck with it. But alas, I didn't. I have used every excuse under the sun to talk myself out of these runs so I got to thinking, "Is this something I actually WANT to do?" Yes I know, we've all been through these moments when it comes to running and I've read so many success stories of people just pushing through. I feel that this is deeper than that. I'm not nervous excited about the race, I'm dreading it. Is that how it's supposed to be?

I hate the idea of quitting and throwing away my registration fee, but there isn't an ounce of desire left. Here are some of reasons excuses as to why I'm walking away from my marathon aspirations:
  • It's winter which means its cold. I do NOT want to get up at 6am to run in 30 degree weather. That is torture to me.
  • The thought of spending 3 + hours running on the weekends when they are getting so jam packed with the holidays is an incredible time commitment I guess I'm not ready for
  • I prefer running after work and with my hour plus commute home, it's dark by the time I get home.
  • No one is running the race with me in Disney nor do I know anyone training for a marathon who would do long runs with me. Which makes a long run alone an even more daunting task
Again, I know these are nothing but excuses and I have no REAL valid reason, but to me it comes down to happiness. I'm a firm believer in doing things that make you happy. In the beginning, running was hard but it made me happy. I loved the way I felt after a run even a 7 mile run. But these long distances are strictly painful. I'm not getting the joy out of it that I used to. They are mentally and physically hard.

I think I have decided that I need to train for a marathon that maybe takes place in the fall so I'm not stuck training in the winter. I am not giving up this dream of someday running a marathon. I just don't think this year was my year.

Sorry for the Debbie Downer post, but I wanted to be honest and do my best in justifying my decision. I'm still a little disappointed in myself and this decision, but all in all I think it's the right one for me. I will continue to run on my treadmill short distances to stay in shape, but as for long distances, I'm taking a break.

I can't thank everyone enough for their support in my training up till now and I hope to have your support in the future when I can put my whole heart into a marathon.

Time to Get Serious

I don't know how many times I'm going to post about my marathon training failures, but I'm REALLY hoping I can get my life together and get back on target this week! (FOR REAL!)

I ran twice last week, but no long run (go figure).

Nothing to write home about, but at least I did something right?

For some reason 15 miles has been a huge mental block for me. I've hit the half way point and am happy with my half marathon time, but now it's time to get serious and train like I'm running a full and not a half.

This week my goal is to run a total of 22 miles. Three and four miles on Tuesday and Thursday, then 15 miles this weekend. It WILL happen. I have exactly 2 months before the Disney Marathon which is only 8 more long runs! I now have to play catch up and increase my runs by 2 miles every weekend. That will put me at 26 miles on Dec 22 and then two weeks to taper back before the race.

Let's talk about something more fun, shall we? Ready to see who won $40 in free Mary Kay products?! Drumroll please.......

Training Tuesday - The Missing Week

You read that right. It's time for a fresh start. I think after two race weekends in a row and hitting 13 miles on my plan, I've hit a major roadblock. For some reason I'm so intimidated by the second half of my marathon training. The thought that my long runs are now 15, 17, and 20 miles without a scheduled race to hold me accountable is very daunting.

I feel like every week I promise to do better but still end up missing runs. Running 3 days a week really isn't a big commitment. I CAN DO THIS! No better time then now to get serious.

So this week? Even though I am traveling for work again, I have NO excuse not to run.  Since I'm intimidated by these long runs and that I took a week completely off from running, I think I will do 3 miles on Tuesday, 3 on Thursday, and 4-5 on Saturday.

As for now, here's some motivation to get me going again:

Training Tuesday - Week 16

I cannot believe I've been training for this Marathon for 16 weeks now! I'm halfway done and I feel like know the worst is yet to come. As you read from last week's update, I feel like I'm in a good place with my Half Marathon time so that's comforting. The scary part is next. Those last 13.1 miles seem impossible to me. I can envision running 13.1 miles because I've done it 3 times, but 26.2?!

That's my freak out moment of the week hour. With that out of the way, let's talk about how I did this week!

I don't know how I let my two mid-week runs go by the waste side, but I did. I'm not proud of it, but like I always do, I'm moving on. After all, that's the beauty of training for a Marathon, there's always next week, and the next, and even the week after that!

Sunday was the Army 10 Miler and I was apprehensive going into it. I don't enjoy messing with the chaos of the city and being in unfamiliar territory with 30,000 other people. While there will be TONS of people at the Disney Marathon, I'm ok with it because I know the course like the back of my hand and my surroundings are familiar. I am fully aware that I'm a nut job and my logic is not so logical. :)

Regardless, I went into the race with one goal: To not lose my friend. No, I wasn't worried she wasn't going to make it, I was worried we would get split up. With all those people and not having a cell phone I could only imagine what it would be like trying to meet up later. So the plan was to run side by side. When one of us needed a break, the other took one too. We were a team.

I stayed at her house the night before because as I previously mentioned, city traffic is not my strong suite. Oh and did I mention how much I hate early mornings? It was best I had someone make sure I even got up.

After a crowded, but not long metro ride, we got to the race and realized we needed to get in line for the bathroom before it started. Look at those crazy lines!

Yep, that's us before the race with the Pentagon behind us. It was a perfect fall day!

 So happy to be done!

The Army and various sponsors had tents everywhere. It was nice to walk around a bit after the race.

This week my schedule looks like this:

Tuesday - 45 min run
Thursday - 45 min run
Saturday - 15 miles

Let me know I'm not the only one with crazy long runs out there. Grab a button and link up with me for Training Tuesdays!

Race Bib Keepsake DIY

If you are like me and have participated in various races here and there over the years, you might need a place to keep all the race bibs you've collected! I've been wanting to do something with my bibs for a while, but haven't gotten around to it until now.

Here is my collection of bibs that span from 5k's to half marathons.

Up until now, I have been keeping track of my race dates and times (as they are not always written on the bibs) on the back.

After buying a $12 frame from Walmart I had everything and was ready for my project!

It only took a few minutes to play around with the bibs to get them to fit just right.

I realized that once I taped down the bibs, I would have a hard time accessing the dates and times of the races, so since I had a little space in one corner, I wrote down the race name, date and time on a piece of paper.

Once everything was taped down, this was the end result! I am going to hang it in our garage next to the treadmill for inspiration. These bibs are very important to me, and if you have earned 1 or 50, you feel the same way. That bib ran each and every race with you. It's an original artifact from that race you can treasure for years to come!

Training Tuesday - Half Marathon Results

So as most of you know, I ran my second half marathon ever this past weekend and it was....AWESOME! I went into this race with a good amount of confidence due to the fact I've done a fairly good job keeping with my training. Instead of just finishing (I knew that wouldn't be a problem) I set a time goal for this race. My goal was to finish in under 2:30 which would be 14 minutes faster than the Disney Princess Half Marathon.

When I walked up to meet my friends Sunday morning, I suddenly got very nervous and immediately regretted setting a time goal. Regardless, I was there, and had no choice but to run.

It started our cold and dark (the sun wasn't even up yet!) but within a few minutes, I was warmed up and feeling good. We ran 7 miles without stopping which I was very happy with our pace. At that point I realized finishing under 2:30 was not going to be an issue. Now the game was to see how far under 2:30 I could get!

Mile 10 was when things got super challenging. Mike had running gels and was able to refuel which made him energized and able to keep me going. The last bit of the race was a lap on the high school track and let me tell you, there is nothing more defeating then turning the corner and hoping you are done only to have to get on a race track and run one last giant circle. At the very end, Mike stopped and waited for me to catch up so we could cross the finish line at the same time. Talk about being a team!

Dying to know my time?!!! Drum roll please.....2:17:15!!!!!!! Yes, you read that right, I beat my time by 27 MINUTES! Can you tell I'm happy?!

So what's on the schedule this week? I am recovering by only running 2 short easy runs before another race on Sunday, The Army 10 Miler.

Keep me updated on your training programs! If I can do it, so can YOU!

Training Tuesday - Oct 9

Why is it that after a vacation you are left feeling more tired and behind then you were before you left?! While I managed to get ALL my runs in while in Disney, I came home with no motivation. I should have run Thursday and Saturday, but instead I skipped them......

At least I was motivated while on vacay! Working out with the gym all to myself!

I'm over being upset about it. I still have 3 months before the marathon and 2 runs aren't going to make or break me. I attempted the long run twice this week but have decided to just let it go. I wanted to run the half marathon course that I'm doing this weekend to get a feel for it, but work stood in the way on Saturday and weather prevented me from doing it on Sunday. (Read: Chickened out) It was decided that my running partner and I would give it a try after work on Monday....NOT! He was feeling under the weather and I talked to my friend who has run a number of marathons and she told me I'd be stupid if I ran 13 miles just 1 week before my 13 mile race. Just the justification I needed! You don't have to tell me twice! So long story short, I've decided to run 5 miles tonight and 4 miles on Thursday. Then the race will be on Sunday.

So there you have it, my boring and not so successful training update. I love hearing about everyone else's training plans so link up with me and share!

Training Tuesday - Week 13

As you know, I've been on vacation all week. HOWEVER, I've still managed to work out according to my training program!! I'm very happy about this because I've always been the girl who "says" I'm going to work out, but never do. Don't get me wrong, I always have the intention, I mean I waste the room in my suitcase to bring everything, I just never "get around to it" (that's the excuse I use any way).

So for those of you following my training, let me catch you up on what you might have missed! I had a rough week last week. I was supposed to run 13 miles but the weekend came and went and no miles were ran. Lucky for me, my friend convinced me to run the 13 on Tuesday (instead of Saturday - stats here) before I left for vacation and boy am I glad I did!

Moving on to this week. Since I had a long run last week, I only had a 4 mile run on the schedule for Saturday along with my two training runs. I counted the 13 miles on Tuesday as a training run (yes, it counts as last week's long run, AND this week's training run. I never claimed to be perfect). Then I found the gym at the resort and ran 3 on Thursday and 4 on Saturday.

Here are my stats for those workouts:

Ok, I'm aware this run is only 2 miles, but there is a reason for that. The machine quit (I could have accidentally hit the emergency stop button) on me after 1 mile! There isn't much to tell. The first mile was 9:43 so I did a total of 3 miles in 28:19 (my math could be wrong, but you get the picture).

You will notice these runs seem slower than my other treadmill runs. That is because my treadmill sits in my every so slightly sloped downward garage and the calibration might be off, so it's good to run other treadmills to see how different it is. :)

In case you missed it on Friday's update, here is a snapshot of the 13 mile run:

Disclaimer: You'll notice the pace is a 12min mile.  This is because we walked the last 3 miles due to the fact we didn't bring water or gels....ooops

I plan to run 13 again this weekend to get prepared for the Heritage Hunt Half Marathon, then the following week is the Army 10 Miler. I guess it's safe to say my training is now in full force!

Here is one of my favorite pictures from the trip so far. I don't care how old you are, there is something about that castle that is just breathtaking. Tell me I'm wrong, I dare you!

Training Tuesday - Week 12 - Fail

I chose crafting over running this weekend....ooops. Do I regret it? Yeah a little (although it was definitely more fun than running). But I'm not going to beat myself up over it since I only missed a 4 mile run. It's a new week, and I have a 13 mile long run to do on Saturday! I WILL DO THIS!

Here are my two treadmill runs from Tuesday and Thursday of last week. Practically identical!

I was determined to show I was a little bit faster on this run. :)

Tonight I plan on running 4 miles and maybe do 5 on Thursday since Saturday is such a long one. Usually I work my retail job after my long runs, so I don't end up being too sore because I stay on my feet the rest of the day. This weekend, after my run I am getting in a car to drive 2 hours to my in-laws. I'll let you know how my body handles that!

Training Tuesday - Week 11

SOOOO happy I completed all of week 11! It felt great to get to the end of the week and not feel guilty for missing a run.

During the week, I did two treadmill runs and then my long run on the trail. My treadmill runs went great! I was hardly winded and didn't stop to walk once!

Tuesday was 4.29 miles in 40 min and Thursday was 5 miles in 44:18 min.

Mike (running buddy from work) and I decided to do our long run on Sunday morning instead of Saturday. We couldn't have asked for a more beautiful morning. It was 60 degrees and not a cloud in the sky. Here are some pictures from the trail:

 Pretty stone bridge

This bridge was super long and a nice change from the dirt and rocks we were running on.

We had some storms on Saturday and I'm not sure if this was from them or from something else. Regardless, it was pretty neat to run but a completely uprooted tree.

View from the start of the run. Always the hardest part...getting started.

So, how did we do? Thanks to the Nike plus app, I can keep track of every step!

The training schedule called for me to run 11 miles as my long run, but we looped back to the car at 9.7 miles so instead of running out another .65 miles and back, we ran around the parking lot until we hit 10 miles. I can't stand to not finish on a whole number! All in all, it was a good run. I was a little disappointed with the time as it was slower than the 9 mile run. But the terrain definitely plays a huge factor in all of that. The second half had a ton of uphill parts that were killer! By that point I was already tired from being over halfway done, so we just walked those parts so as not to die.

Next week my training program calls for two maintenance runs and then a 4 mile long run. However, we are going to run 12 miles of the Heritage Half course to get used to that terrain (should be easier since it's pavement).

I've met some readers who are also training for various races and it got me thinking. Let's all get together and do a Tuesday link up! It would be a great place for us all to get together and maybe even meet people who are training for the same race! So what do you think? Let's give it a try this week. All you have to do is grab the button and link up below to share your motivation!
